Start by telling us a little about yourself..
I am a dentist and mom of one very energetic almost 3 year old boy (many members get to experience his wild
energy on a daily basis…sorry). I grew up in Bismarck, ND where I lived most of my life, moved to Phoenix, AZ for dental school where I lived for 5 years before transplanting to Fairbanks, AK in 2014. Outside of the gym, I love traveling, reading, hiking, gardening, anything outdoors as long as it’s in the summer. And wine…I really like wine!
What was your reason for joining CrossFit Fairbanks?
Fitness has always been a big part of my life. I hadn’t worked out much since my son was born and I really wanted to get active again. I honestly didn’t know much about Crossfit before joining, but it was very important for me to join a gym with a strong family welcoming. Crossfit Fairbanks is very family friendly.
What were your thoughts after your first workout? First week?
I was actually very impressed with the first workout and the first week. The workouts were high intensity, and one of the things that was, and still is very important to me is high intensity workouts. My favorite workouts are those that leave me with nothing left. I was however pretty intimidated since I didn’t know a lot of the movements.
What makes CrossFit different from other workouts and fitness programs you have tried in the past?
My previous workouts consisted of lifting lighter weights for many repetitions, and low impact cardio. While it was still a good workout, I felt that I often hit a plateau or would get bored with all of it, and stop working out all together. With Crossfit there is always a new goal to attain, always something to work at, and a new personal record to achieve. It’s never boring!
What is your favorite movement/lift? Least favorite?
Favorite: Back squat and front squat have become my favorite movement. When I first started at CrossFit Fairbanks, I didn’t care for squats because I felt weak and also because I had a lot of lower back pain. As I’ve gained strength my back pain has diminished and I’m a squat lover!
Least Favorite: Snatch. The end.
What is your proudest CrossFit moment thus far?
I don’t have just one single proudest moment, but seeing the improvements that I have made athletically over the past year is pretty incredible. And every PR is a proud moment.
What impact has working out had on you in and out of the gym?
It has been said that habitually pushing the body allows people to confront the daily stresses of life with less difficulty. I truly believe this. Not only has Crossfit helped me gain strength and build endurance, but I also have increased energy, less back and neck pain, and less stress!
Who is your favorite Superhero and why?
Superman, duh he can fly.
What is your favorite cheat meal?
Do I have to pick just one? Cheeseburger and fries, nachos, and pizza..
What advice would you give a prospect coming in?
Come in with an open mind and stay awhile. You may not perfect the movements immediately, but sticking with it is key. You will get there. Also…get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

It has been an absolute pleasure being able to coach Barbi and watch her progress in the gym. She always shows up with a smile and somehow manages to maintain it during a grueling workout. Barbi works hard at building strength, gaining more stamina, and mastering skills. In addition to her hard work she is also a great cheerleader for all the members, encouraging and cheering people on.
